Good god. When ChowderDad and I get old, we are going to be like this couple we saw at this restaurant. They walked in and instead of just thinking “uh oh”, they start bitching about the counter service, the decor, and the menu.
It was an impulse-panic situation. OMG we might starve! We cannot wait! Stop at the first place with chowder and a beer sign!
ChowderBoy had “macaroni and cheese bites” which apparently is fried mac and cheese and it was a massive hit. For the boy. The parents almost died.
It was terrible. The beer selection was awful, no bloody marys, the chowder was gross. Altogether entirely *blech*.
Based on Beau MacMillan’s recommendation that this is the best chowder EVAH, we visited Cabbyshack in Plymouth. As a family, we watch “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” and when we saw “the best chowder evah”, we were convinced we had to check it out.
Here’s the verdict, as tweeted while eating:
So I guess that all adds up to this – we weren’t terribly impressed. Neither ChowderKid finished their chowder and we ended up bringing home almost two cups. Which is almost unheard of for us.
It gets an 8.5 but only because it was better than most of the stuff we regularly get. The experience was a bit much – loud and kind of frazzled. And a bit frantic for some reason.
It also could be that we have an issue – we need to avoid all tourist destinations in peak season, no matter what.
Tuesday: We went to a sushi place in Falmouth which had great fresh fish. they had this “Crazy Taco Roll” that was fantastic and ChowderGirl loved it. I think the place is called Homeport Sushi. Highly recommend it if you’re bored of eating fried food.
Wednesday: Barnstable County Fair and the required corn dogs. That is the culinary delight of the evening. The 4H club managed to have shepherd’s pie but ChowderBoy was excited by the notion of his annual corn dog.
Thursday: We are contemplating going to Plymouth to a place called the CabbyShack for chowder tonight. The other choice is that we stay home, watch a movie, and I make chowder. Any thoughts?
ChowderBoy has a specific request. He wants to start reviewing Shepherd’s Pie.
So here is his official review:
“The Irish Club has much better Shepherd’s Pie. It has better potatoes and have crust on top and no corn. It is not very good here. I want ice cream.”
Generally speaking, I have to agree. Dinner here was a disappointment – though not a surprising one. The mozzie sticks were very good but nothing truly special. ChowderGirl was surprised to learn that plain pasta with butter is an option and that she likes it very much. She thought it was absolutely brilliant. ChowderDad and I tried a Monty Python ale and it was terrible. So here we are, with pretty much nothing to show for the meal. Even the beer wasn’t great.
When I went to drop the kids at ChowderGrandparents this past weekend, I managed to forget a hundred things they needed so we all went out on Saturday to LLBean and various places. We decided to check out Onset on our way back.
I haven’t been there since high school. We found a pub that had chowder. Here’s the Tweet Report:
It really was. We think it had sour cream in it.
The place was really strange. Actually, all of Onset is strange.
I always have this thing where I envision what a place was like “before” historical events happened. We went to college in Central New York and I always used to think about how it must have been once upon a time. Onset is like that. Before the Canal, it must have been amazing. Now it’s just kind of gross.
And they had a pitiful beer selection.
But the chowder was tasty and the view was quite nice. So if you’re looking for a distraction on the way to the Cape, Onset’s Wicket Pub is not a bad idea.
With ChowderGirl still wearing her cape and ChowderBoy in his standard issue backward t-shirt, the kids went to the Courtyard with ChowderGrandparents this evening.
I have managed to convince the grandparents once again that it is a great idea to let us leave the kids there for a week. (SCORE!)
So they went to visit Jay Miller and hang out and eat chowder and god knows what else. I have no idea how they’re surviving their tough life.

In the meantime, I am eating popcorn for dinner and watching endless stupid television.
ChowderGirl and ChowderBoy BOTH took the helm for the first real time on a serious sailboat this weekend. Bigtime. They were outstanding – I think they’re naturals, of course. ChowderGirl is starting sailing camp on Monday and it requires her to actually wear something besides a colonial dress or smocked bishop.
As always, we went to The Chart Room after our sail for a bite to eat.
Here’s what to eat there: Chowder. Here’s what not to eat there: Pastrami.
These are obvious, I know. But 6 year olds sometimes lose their minds.

They’re famous for their mudslides. You should have one or four of those as well.
“It was good for not being real clam chowder but it wasn’t good.” says ChowderGirl.
Lenny & Joe’s was just fine. It wasn’t outstanding. It wasn’t great. It was flavorful, Connecticut style, and fine.
We are in this phase where we are stopping on the way to the Cape each weekend, seeking a decent chowder in CT. It’s really not been going well. Seriously, maybe we are jerks but nothing has come close to Massachusetts chowder. I don’t understand it. The clams could be fresher, there could be more of them, and they could actually add some flavor.
Everyone raves about Lenny & Joe’s and their menu claims to have famous clam chowder. But nothing was famousworthy. The good news was that it is RIGHT off 95 so we’re pleased about that.
